Students Learn That Everyone Can Go for Gold

Inspirational 400m runner and gold medal winner, Derek Redmond, was the key-note speaker on motivation, dedication, travel and perseverance to a group of over 150 sports and public services students at North Hertfordshire College’s Hitchin Centre on Wednesday 10th March. The event was supported by Aimhigher Hertfordshire, part of the national Aimhigher programme, which encourages young people with potential, particularly FE college students, to consider higher education as their next step in ‘aiming higher’ in life.

NHC expands Stevenage Skills Centre

NHC EXPAND STEVENAGE SKILLS CENTRE
North Hertfordshire College’s Stevenage Skills Centre opened its new extension on March 4th providing 8700 sq ft of space for classrooms, work benches, construction and motor vehicle engineering and maintenance. Since the launch of the Skills Centre in 2008 it has been inundated with students seeking practical courses and this new facility will accommodate 280 more students. More
National Skills Academy Founder College Status Launched by NHC

At Knebworth House on Wednesday 3rd March, North Hertfordshire College (NHC) announced the launch of its status as a Founder College of the National Skills Academy for Creative & Cultural Skills (NSA) before a VIP audience. As a Founder College it has the remit of raising the profile of creative industries across the sub-region. The event included a showcase of creative and cultural student work from across colleges in the sub-region. This included film production, dance, music and a fashion show.

World Skills Heat at NHC

NHC’s Stevenage Based Skills Centre Hosts WorldSkills UK “Kick-Off”

North Hertfordshire College’s Skills Centre, a purpose built construction and automotive training facility in Stevenage, has been selected as the location for the launch of the 2011 WorldSkills UK team selection process. This kick-off event, taking place from 4th to 6th March, marks the opening stage of WorldSkills UK. Also, it sets in train the identification process for the country’s premier-league electrical installation specialists, and plumbers, who will be members of the UK team for WorldSkills 2011, taking place in London next year. Three young plumbers from Nottingham, London and Leeds, plus four electrical installers from Somerset, Middlesex, Hampshire and Lincolnshire will be competing in the heat.

One of Hertfordshire’s longest established and most prestigious hairdressing salons, Hair by Phillip located at Stotfold, has a reputation for the pursuit of excellence. The company has been trading for some 37 years, and its owner- manager Phillip Parkin’s skills are recognised internationally. Phillip has a reputation for helping young people to gain experience and fulfil their potential in the hairdressing industry, and his latest apprentice Sinead Ryan is proving an outstanding beneficiary of this approach.

Brickwork Apprentice Follows in Her Father's Footsteps

Katy began her one-year Childcare NVQ Level 2 apprenticeship course in September 2009, working with the long-established pre-school Tiny Hands, located at Grange Community Centre in Letchworth. More
International Spotlight For NHC’S Student Fashionistas

Against the backdrop of the world’s largest fashion and beauty event, Art and Design students from North Hertfordshire College saw their clothing designs professionally cat-walked by top models at this year’s Clothes Show Live at Birmingham’s NEC, running from 4th – 9th December. This annual celebrity studded event is known as "the ultimate fashionistas day out" and attracts leading design and beauty organisations from around the world. More
NHC Catering Students Send Orphans Christmas Gifts

Christmas will have an extra helping of magic for a group of orphans in Bulgaria this year, thanks to the support of catering students at North Hertfordshire College. The 43 Hertfordshire students have, at their own initiative, successfully set out to collect gifts for every one of the 69 residents in the Novo Selo orphanage. The gifts will be personalised by name and presented on Christmas day. More
Apprentice James Bell Sets a Benchmark

Hairdressing is an industry that many classify as “feminine oriented”, but some of the most successful hairdressers are men, and James Bell, 17, of Baldock in Hertfordshire looks set to join their ranks. In September 2009 James began a two-year NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing Apprenticeship with Stone Hairdressing of Stevenage, involving three days practical work in the salon each week plus one day’s class work at North Hertfordshire College. NEW! Refrigerant handling course for MAC in cars and vans

From 4 July 2010, all Mobile Air Conditioning (MAC) technicians working with cars and vans must hold a refrigerant handling qualification that meets the European Union F Gas regulations. This NEW one-day course at the Stevenage Skills Centre, will run every Monday from 11th January to 22nd March and leads to the IMI Level 3 Award in Automotive Refrigerant Handling.

Monarch's new apprenticeships ensure aircraft and passenger safety

Apprenticeships for young people in the challenging and highly skilled field of aerospace engineering have been established at London Luton Airport, as the result of a joint initiative between Monarch Aircraft Engineering and North Hertfordshire College (NHC). The ten apprentices taking part are predominantly aged between 16 and 19 years, and were selected for employment through a process of interview and assessment that originally involved 350 potential trainees from across the UK. Each of these young men demonstrated the rare and exceptional qualities required to become a technical specialist in engineering and maintenance regimes that ensure aircraft and passenger safety.
